What happens to your PF after a layoff — the complete India guide

29 Aug 2026·3 min read

Getting laid off is disorienting enough without having to decode EPFO rules at the same time. Here is exactly what happens to your Provident Fund and what you should do about it.

Your PF balance does not disappear

The money in your EPF account belongs to you. A layoff does not affect your balance. Your employer cannot touch it. The only question is when and how you access it.

You have two options — withdrawal or transfer

If you are joining another company within two months, transfer your PF to your new employer's account using Form 13 on the EPFO member portal. This preserves your continuous service record, which matters for pension calculations and future withdrawals.

If you are not joining immediately, you can withdraw after two months of unemployment. You do not need to wait longer. The two-month rule is the trigger.

How to withdraw

Log in to the EPFO member portal at epfindia.gov.in using your UAN. Your UAN should already be active — if not, activate it before your last working day while your HR still has access to help you.

File a composite claim form online. You will need your UAN, Aadhaar linked to your UAN, and bank account details seeded in the portal. Most withdrawals are processed within 15 to 20 working days.

What you will receive

You receive your employee contribution (12% of basic salary) plus your employer contribution (3.67% of basic salary — the rest goes to EPS, the pension scheme) plus interest accumulated at the current EPF rate, which is 8.25% for 2023–24.

The pension component — EPS

If you have completed 10 years of continuous service, you are eligible for a monthly pension from EPS after age 58. Do not withdraw the EPS component if you have crossed this threshold — you will lose the pension entitlement permanently.

If you have less than 10 years of service, you can withdraw the EPS component along with your EPF using Form 10C.

Tax on PF withdrawal

If you withdraw before completing five years of continuous service across employers, the withdrawal is taxable. After five years, it is fully tax-free. If you are transferring to a new employer, the service period carries forward.

Before your last day — do this

Check that your UAN is activated, your Aadhaar is seeded, your bank account is linked, and your KYC is approved on the portal. Ask HR to confirm your exit date is updated in their EPFO records. Delays in exit date updates are the most common reason PF withdrawals get stuck.

One more thing

Your gratuity, if applicable, is separate from PF. If you have completed five years of continuous service, you are entitled to gratuity under the Payment of Gratuity Act regardless of whether you were laid off or resigned. Follow up on this separately in writing.
