Freelancing as a bridge — how to earn while you search

5 Sept 2026·11 min read

A job search takes time. The average time to find a new role at a mid-senior level in India is three to five months. Freelancing during that period is not a fallback — it is a smart use of time that keeps income coming in, keeps your skills current, and gives you something concrete to talk about in interviews.

The case for freelancing during a search

Beyond the obvious financial benefit, freelancing does something important for your confidence and your narrative. It means you are never "unemployed" in the way that word carries psychological weight. You are consulting. You are between roles. You are working independently while you find the right permanent opportunity.

This is not spin — it is accurate. And it changes how you feel walking into interviews.

What kinds of freelancing work

The most accessible freelance work is adjacent to what you already do. A customer success manager can offer onboarding consulting to early-stage startups. A finance professional can offer bookkeeping or CFO advisory to small businesses. An HR manager can offer recruitment support or policy writing. A product manager can offer roadmap consulting or user research.

The clients most likely to hire you quickly are people who already know your work — former colleagues who have moved to other companies, founders in your network, or companies where you have contacts. Start there.

How to get started quickly

Update your LinkedIn headline to include "Available for consulting engagements" or similar. Send personal messages to 10 people in your network explaining that you are taking consulting projects while you search for your next permanent role. Ask if they know anyone who might need your skills.

Set a simple rate. As a starting point, take your monthly salary, divide by 20 working days, and charge that as your day rate. You can adjust based on market feedback.

Platforms worth knowing in India

Toptal and Upwork work for some professionals, particularly in tech and design. Flexing It is India-specific and focuses on experienced professionals. Pepper Content and Writesonic are options if you can write. Refrens helps with invoicing and client management once you have work coming in.

What to track

Keep records of every project — what you did, what the outcome was, what the client said. These become proof points in interviews. "While I was searching, I helped three early-stage companies set up their customer success processes" is a stronger answer to "what have you been doing" than silence.

The tax side

Freelance income in India is taxable. If you expect to earn more than ₹20 lakhs in a financial year, you need to register for GST. Below that threshold, you do not, but you still need to declare the income in your ITR. Keep your invoices and track your expenses — laptop, internet, software subscriptions — as these are deductible against your freelance income.

When to stop

If the right permanent opportunity comes along, take it. Freelancing is a bridge, not a destination — unless you decide you prefer it, which some people do. Keep your search active throughout. Freelancing that becomes all-consuming can inadvertently delay a permanent role by six months. Stay focused on what you actually want.
